Save money and energy this winter
Tuesday 1 June 2010
With the cold weather setting in, ActewAGL is reminding everyone that they don’t have to freeze in order to reduce their carbon footprint and keep their energy bills low this winter. The following energy-saving tips are easy to do in any home.
Save energy by:
- wearing layers of clothing indoors to keep warm
- closing off any rooms you don’t need to heat
- using time switches to provide heating and lighting only when required
- adjust the thermostat on your heater to between 18 and 20 degrees
- using only an electric blanket to warm the bed instead of heating an entire bedroom at night
- using reverse angle ceiling fans, which cost little to run, to force hot air down to floor level
- keeping your radiant heater reflectors clean and free of dust
- sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent the transfer of heat from inside to outside
- on sunny winter days, take advantage of free solar warmth by pulling back the curtains and letting the sunshine in
- consider installing double glazed windows.
ActewAGL Director Sales, Marketing and Corporate Affairs Paul Walshe said, “Winter is the peak energy use period within the ACT, whether it is through heating, drying clothes or running additional lights.
“By making a few simple changes in the home, not only can our customers save money escaping the winter chill, but they can also help reduce their carbon footprint.”
