The world-wide-web

The world-wide-web, or simply the web, is the best-known service on the internet, so well known that it is often, mistakenly, referred to as the internet.

Developed in the early 1990s, the web was the first internet service to provide a common interface for people to easily move between pieces of information stored on different computers using hyperlinks.

It replaced the need to use a variety of interfaces to access information on different computers. It also allowed graphics and text to be viewed in the same page at the same time in a consistent way - even when the graphics and text were stored in different computers.

Most importantly, the technology used to make the web work was free and simple to use.
